Virtual classroom: Privacy and risks
This website allows to create virtual classrooms that may be joined by students and teachers. Teachers may also invite students, and they may even create "virtual" accounts for their physical students that will allow them to access the site (via login) without creating an account and without providing an e-mail address on their own.
Virtual classrooms may store all kinds of data, including personal data – but only if provided by students or teachers, as we will never ask for specific information to be entered. Students and teachers freely define and decide what data may be stored, which also means that students and especially teachers will be fully responsible for all kinds of data that will be uploaded to the virtual classroom or that will be stored in it by entering information in online forms.
Students and teachers may upload files (including photos) and store texts, they may store and organize their projects and assignments within such virtual classrooms, teachers and students may store and publish data in online portfolios, teachers may add students to specific groups, teachers may also keep track of students' work and assignments, and teachers may even evaluate students and store such evaluation data within this virtual classroom.
All virtual classroom data will only be stored on our servers and on our backup systems, and we will never make any of this data available to thrid parties, except for partners that may be involved in the management of either the servers or the backup systems of course.
Any user can open a virtual classromm and act as a teacher on this website. If you join a virtual classroom (created by another user) as a student, then you should be aware that the teacher(s) in this classroom may store information about you within the classroom. This includes group memberships, evaluation data, as well as other data maybe. If you do not with other users to evaluate your work or to store such information about you, then do not join any virtual classrooms.
Risks and worst case szenario
In case of a leak or a breach, either caused by third parties (aka "hackers") or by faulty software (aka "bugs") virtual classroom data could become accessible to third parties, and data could be made public or transmitted to other parties. In this case personal information about students and teachers could leak, and depending on the type of data stored by students and teachers this could even include sensible personal information.
WE THEREFORE STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST STORING ANY SENSIBLE (PERSONAL) INFORMATION OR DATA ON THIS WEBSITE.
Running an anonymous virtual classroom
If you're a member of a virtual classroom or if you intend joining a virtual classroom then we stronly recommend to make it hard for other parties to identify yourself by entering only an absolute minimum of personal information. It will in fact be possible to use the entire virtual classroom technology almost anonymously.
You may freely choose your username when creating an account on this website (as long as this username is not already in use), and we recommend chosing a username that will not allow to identify you as a physical person. Entering profile information and providing a profile name (aka "real name") is purely optional. This means that the only personal information you absolutely have to provide will be your e-mail address, your birthday and your country (as required by US and EU law respectively).
When creating a virtual classroom you may freely chose the name of the classroom, and you will not have to enter any further information unless you freely choose to do so. This means that it will be hard (although not necessarely impossible) to link your virtual classroom to any physical group of people or to any physical existing classroom in a specific school for example.
If you do not use real names for your account and for your virtual classroom(s), then only your account information (e-mail, birthday, country) as well as your IP address may link to any physical identities in the real world. Using an e-mail address that has been specifically created for creating an account on this website may further reduce risks, although we strongly recommend using an e-mail account whose login credentials you will not lose.
Don't forget that entering fallback information (e-mail and "security questions") in your account may also allow to identify you in case of a leak or breach, even if this data is not publically available under normal circumstances.
Working with anonymous (aka "virtual") student accounts
When opening a virtual classroom as a teacher you may invite other users to either join as additional teachers, or as students. Instead of adding existing users, you may also directly create accounts within the virtual classroom for your students. Those are "virtual" accounts, as they are not linked to any e-mail address. You may enter your students' real names and upload a profiles image or photo, but you don't have to. Your students may enter / upload profile information (including their real name, a profile image / photo, as well as personal information), but they don't have to.
This makes it very easy to create "anonymous" accounts, by chosing random strings as usernames for example. If your students don't enter any personal information, then it will be very hard to link their accounts to physical persons. If you're using the virtual classroom as a school teacher (or in similar environments), then remember that it may become more easy to identify your classroom as well as other students of only one single student or one single teacher starts entering personal information on the website. We therefore strongly recommend to discuss those topics with your students before opening a virtual classroom, before adding accounts and / or before creating any "virtual" accounts.
Child protection and age limitation
You need to be 13 years old in order to create an account this website, and in some country the age limit may be even higher (16 years in most EU countries for example). It is strictly prohibited to use tools that require a login / password on this website if you're younger than the age required by law in your country. When creating an account you need to indicate your birthday, and if you're younger than 16 then you also need to indicate your country as required by EU law. It is strictly prohibited to enter false information in both cases.
This also means that all students and teachers on this website must be at least 13 years old (or 16 years old in most EU countries). As a teacher you will have to make sure that all of your actions on this site comply with national and international law. If you are unsure if you're allowed to use certain tools on this site, then do not use those tools, or do not use the site at all. You will be fully responsible for all of your actions.
Laws and regulations
When opening "virtual" accounts for your students you will have to make sure that all of your students are at least 13 years old (or 16 years old in most EU countries).
In most countries you will also need consent by your students' parents if they are less than 18 years old, or by the students themselves if they are 18 years or older. This applies to both regular users as well as to "virtual" accounts on this platform.
If you are a teacher (and maybe even in other cases) then you will probably need consent by your school administration, by your local authorities, or by your government if you wish to store student data on a website. As is will be impossible for us to check or to verity all national or local laws and regulations, it will be your duty to make sure that you will comply with all laws and regulations that may possibly apply.
YOU ARE FULLY RESPONSIBLE TO COMPLY WITH ALL LOCAL, NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LAWS IF YOU'RE USING THIS WEBSITE.
NEVER STORE (PERSONAL OR NON-PERSONAL) INFORMATION OR DATA ON THIS WEBSITE THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE OF ANY KIND IF IT SHOULD EVER LEAK.
AS A USER YOU ARE FULLY RESPONSIBLE TO COMPLY WITH ALL LAWS THAT MAY APPLY.
WHEN ACTING AS A "TEACHER" (NO MATTER IF YOU'RE A TEACHER IN REAL LIFE OR NOT) ON THIS WEBSITE YOU ARE FULLY RESPONSIBLE TO COMPLY WITH ALL LAWS THAT MAY APPLY, AND TO RESPECT ALL OTHER USERS (WHO MAY ACT AS "STUDENTS") PRIVACY AND RIGHTS.
